The GomphuKora is situated close to the TarshigangDzhong in the heart of Bhutan’s most populous districts. Gomphu when translated from Dzhokha means a Meditation Cave and Kora is to go around something in a circular manner. The festival takes place next to a temple that was built at the site where Guru Rinpoche vanquished the demon Myongkhapa who had followed him all the way from Tibet. The Guru is said to have followed him to his hiding place in the cave, and then he meditated there for 3 days to finally vanquish the demon for the realm of humans.  Over the centuries many prominent leaders and personalities undertook pilgrimagesto this site  the temple as it stands was built by YongzingNgagiWangchuck who was the grandfather of ShabdrungNgawangNamgyal.  Once every year thousands of people from all over eastern Bhutan descend in to the valley is all their pomp to celebrate the vanquishing of the demon and remember the glorious past.
The festival also draws the Dakpa’s from Arunachal Pradesh who undertake an arduous trek through the rugged hills with entire families in tow, to pay their respects at the temple. It is believed that the Dakpa’s gave being making this pilgrimage for over a millennium.  The festival is a celebration of the trimphu of good over evil .
