The Holy Sit of ChortenKora is located in Tarshiyagtse , the eatern most part of Bhutan. The town is located 2 hours away from the town of Tarshigang.
The 17th century Stupa(Chorten) was built by Lama NgawangLoday to drive away a demon who lived at its site and to honor his late uncle JungshiPesan. The Chorten is said to be a replica of the DodunathStupa located in Nepal. The site was blessed by the 13th Je Kempo, SherubWangchuck, and is considered as one of the most significant holy structures of Bhutan. According to legend a young girl from Twang in Arunachal Pradesh, believe to be a Dakini or the female embodiment of enlightened energy agreed to be buried alive inside the Stupa. To honor her sacrifice for the people the DakpaKora( a religious festival ) is organized every year where scores of pilgrims from Bhutan and India alike gather to circumambulate the ChortenKora. Today the ChortenKora festival resembles more like a fair than a religious festival with the surrounding are bustling with food and games stalls etc. unlike other religious festivals the ChortenKora festival does not feature the masked dance performers.
